Northern Lakeshore Trail Connectivity Plan

The communities of Beach Park, North Chicago, Waukegan, Winthrop Harbor, and Zion have a strong base of walking and biking amenities; active Metra ridership; robust sidewalk networks; and pedestrian-friendly, downtown commercial and business districts. These municipalities are also well on their way to leading the Chicagoland area in bicycle and pedestrian-welcoming destinations for residents and visitors.

With the support of CMAP, these municipalities have engaged in a planning process that will involve residents, businesses, trail users, and other stakeholders in working towards safer, greener, healthier, connected, and vibrant communities. Ultimately, the process will result in a connectivity plan that capitalizes on the resources of the area and provides an experience that is unique to the northern lakeshore.

by providing bike and pedestrian routes to move people with a strong sense of security along their entire route, whether they are commuting or recreating.

by providing healthy and affordable transportation options to residents and visitors of all incomes, ages and abilities. Trails will connect all open space opportunities within the communities and will encourage more physical activity to improve the overall health of residents.

with bike and pedestrian routes connecting all five municipalities regionally and locally and providing convenient routes to the many natural resources and parks the communities have to offer, including Illinois Beach State Park. The connection to community and nature will encourage residents and visitors to protect their environmental and people-oriented resources.

by creating a welcoming environment. This will encourage an influx of business and people to the area, promoting a vibrant economy and attractive culture.
