World Architecture Day 2022
Its World Architecture Day, and to celebrate 2022’s theme “Architecture for Well-Being”, we want to share some of Epstein’s notable projects by our architecture design team in which operational and philosophical needs produced sustainable designs that enhance the comfort, well-being, productivity and aesthetics of the occupant's space. In addition to architecture and interior design, Epstein has been providing DesignBuild services for our clients on a national basis for 70 years.
Park Plaza Senior Living Facility Renovation & Expansion
Epstein provided architectural and interior design, as well as full-service engineering services, for an expansion and partial renovation to the Park Plaza Senior Living Center in Chicago, Illinois. Epstein’s design team brought the building’s amenities to one floor, providing easy accessibility to residents and centralized social space as well.
The O’Hare International Airport Emergency & Standby Power Systems
The Epstein-designed replacement provides backup power to the one of the largest and busiest airports in the world. It features two computer-driven, digitally based buildings: one to house new generators, and one to house electrical switchgear, and increases the existing system capacity from 8-10 megawatts to 18 megawatts - enough to power several thousand homes. O’Hare International Airport now has greater system functionality and efficiency during emergencies when normal operations have been impaired.
Illinois Tollway M7 Maintenance Facility
Epstein serves as the lead Architect and Engineer to the Illinois Tollway providing the development of a strategic systemwide Master Plan to include facility assessments of existing facilities, site-specific master plans, and phased repair plans for 11 maintenance facilities. M7 in particular features many sustainable design elements including a rooftop photovoltaic array that supplies supplemental electricity. Skylights and punched openings in the pre-cast wall panels utilize translucent, insulating glass and polycarbonate panels provide abundant natural day lighting. The naturally ventilated high bay maintenance portion includes operable windows. These sustainable design elements helped M7 achieve LEED-Gold certification.
