Todays stop on our weekly Throwback Thursday trip through the Epstein archives takes us back to 1965 in Dixon, Illinois for the opening of the Epstein designed and engineered office and manufacturing facility for the General Cable Corporation. This 47,000 square foot building located at 1200 Warp Road was used to produce wire as well as to enamel and fabric cover General Cables product. This one-story facility contained three separate production zones, a storage and distribution warehouse, an R&D laboratory and general offices. At the time this facility was one of 100 similar type cable manufacturing plants General Cable had in its worldwide production supply chain which included facilities not only in the United States, but Canada and Venezuela as well.
Back in the 60s, and incredibly to this day, General Cable was one of the largest manufacturers of wire and cable solutions in the world. General Cable was originally incorporated in New Jersey in 1927. At that time, it brought together the plant facilities and manufacturing experience of several older companies founded in the 1800s, including Standard Underground Cable, which was founded by American entrepreneur, engineer and electrical industry pioneer George Westinghouse.
General Cable no longer operates out of this Dixon facility and now manufactures its product in Du Quoin, Illinois, near Carbondale. But this Epstein designed building is still operational and now the home of Flex-O-Glass, Inc., manufacturers of custom plastic film extrusion including skin packaging, blister packaging, co-extrusion film and greenhouse film.
