IDOT District 4 Bridges over Henderson Creek

Last week, Epstein's senior project engineer, John Karlovitz, PE and structural design engineer, Andy Valinskas visited Knox County, Illinois (just north of Galesburg) to take a look at and photograph two recently constructed bridges that Epstein designed. For these dual highway bridges, Epstein provided Phase II civil and structural engineering services for the removal and replacement of bridges which span Henderson Creek on I-74.

Epstein's services for this project included preparation of a TSL (Type, Size & Location) report, and construction documents, structural design, the design of approach roadway, guardrail replacement, embankment, stream bed and stream bank rehabilitation, 404 permit, drainage and traffic management.

The existing two-lane, three-span east and westbound structures had span lengths of 121 feet and 115 feet, both on curve alignments, and we're replaced by single span bridges utilizing concrete bulbT beams on concrete deck and supported by integral abutments. The new bridge lengths are 108 feet eastbound and 102 feet westbound.

Lastly Andy, great photos, especially this one of John walking along the edge of the bridge. It almost looks like John, with his yellow parka blowing in the wind, is about to take flight!
