Project no. 54 in our Top 100 Projects countdown is the largest interior design project in Epstein's history: a project that involved the relocation of 2 million square feet of office space for the Sears Merchandise Group.
In early 1990, Sears asked Epstein’s interior design team to develop a conceptual plan to establish the overall space needed to generate a planning concept, supporting Sears’ unique needs for their move from Chicago to a new 780-acre campus in Hoffman Estates. Epstein’s conceptual program was used to guide the building planning for this ambitious relocation.
The new interior space in Hoffman Estates included over 1,300,000 square feet of office space, 90,000 square feet of conference and training space, a 75,000-square-foot merchandise center, and a 65,000-square-foot food service facility. The building was designed to accommodate more than 5,000 employees.
This new space for Sears was delivered in the autumn of 1992.
