Coming in at #11 in our Centennial Year celebration of our Top 100 Projects is the General Electric Tube Warehouse in Chicago, a project that was our first to be completed via the Design-Build delivery method. This trailblazing project for Epstein project, when completed in 1953 was the largest tube warehouse in the world, and it was also one of the first Design-Build projects in the world - making us pioneers in Design-Build.
Located at 3800 N. Milwaukee, this 100,000 square foot warehouse was completed for $875,000 ($9.5M in 2022) featured five truck loading docks as well as four docks that allowed rail access.
This warehouse stored a wide variety of electronic tubes, over 600 in fact, including industrial & transmitting, receiving types, and cathode ray types. In addition, the facility provided space for laboratories, application engineering and sales facilities. This facility distributed to over 21 states totaling over 30 million tubes annually.
Lastly, this project was one that our founder, Abraham Epstein, was not interested in delivery via Design-Build as he thought there was too much risk, but his sons Raymond and Sidney convinced him it was worth the risk and offered another avenue for growth for our firm. A decision, that some nearly 70 years later has proven to be a perfect fit for Epstein as we’ve help deliver over the past 5 years over $1B worth of projects via DesignBuild!
