Last week, Greg Osborne, Epstein's director of civil engineering, participated in a field trip for students from Chicago's Dixon Elementary School to see the new Epstein-designed Illinois Tollway M1 Maintenance Facility. This site visit was hosted by the American Council of Engineering Consultants (ACEC) Students Engaged in Engineering (SEE) Committee. For over 20 years SEE has developed a mentoring program which encourages grade and middle school students to excel in math and science curricula and support their efforts to enter engineering school. During monthly in-class presentations and/or field trips, SEE volunteer engineers share the importance and excitement of engineering. Topics have included solid waste management, bridge inspection, water filtration, surveying, types of engineers, environmental engineering, airport design, stormwater management and many others.

For this Illinois Tollway field trip Dixon's students learned about the backgrounds and day to day activities of members of the Contractor (F.H. Paschen), Architect-Engineer (Epstein) and Construction Engineer (Chastain/Autumn JV). Following the presentations, the students also got a tour and observed the operations of this 96,000 sf maintenance facility.

Lastly, Dixon Elementary also received some great news late last week as well for the first time the school, located at 8306 S. Saint Lawrence Ave. in Chatham neighborhood, received a Level 1+ rating from the 2015 CPS School Quality Rating Report. Way to go Dixon!
