Construction began earlier this year, and Power Construction topped out last week, on Coppia at 1101 W. Van Buren in Chicago’s West Loop. Located between West Van Buren and West Tilden Street, the 29,000 square foot site contains a 21-story, 298-unit residential high rise building, with retail space, a parking garage, and amenities that include a sun deck, swimming pool, a game room, fitness center, a dog park, and dog spa.
As part of the Pizzuti Companies and Goettsch Partners design team, Epstein provided civil engineering services that include public right-of-way improvements comprised of relocating and upgrading sanitary and water mains within Tilden Street, improving crosswalk safety within Van Buren Street by incorporating curb bump-outs at defined crosswalk locations, and ensuring ADA accessibility. Within the site, Epstein created stormwater control measures by designing an underground detention vault that also incorporates a green roof to aid in stormwater volume and rate control. The detention structure collects stormwater and releases it into the City combined sewer system at a rate that is much less than pre-development conditions. To save space and minimize site costs, Epstein creatively located the detention structure under the parking garage entrance ramp.
