The FXFOWLE Epstein designed renovation of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, besides completely modernizing and transforming that facility into a true 21st Century exhibition center, has also become the home to eleven species of birds according to a study by the New York City Audubon Society and Fordham University.

There were 524 bird sightings around the 6.75-acre plant covered roof at Javits including Canadian geese, American Kestrels, herring gulls, great black-backed gulls, rock pigeons, mourning doves, fish crows, barn swallows, northern mocking birds, European swallows and house swallows. The survey was done last spring and summer and credits not only the green roof but also the special glass installed that helps to prevent bird strikes for the attraction of wildlife.

If you were curious the most commonly seen birds at Javits were the herring gulls, European swallows and house swallows. And Kathryn Heintz, the director of the NYC Audubon Society, believes that this mix of birdlife will only grow as the green roof matures over the coming years.
